The small decisions amazingly define our lives. A teaching
colleague of mine related how a tiny decision altered his life
completely.

He was driving to the next town to seek his fi rst
teaching position. There were several cars in front of him as
he came up to the intersection.

The light turned red and as he
sat there in traffic, he glanced over to the left and saw a school.
Instead of staying in line, he decided to turn into the parking
lot and check the hiring status of the school.

They were looking
for a teacher with his credentials. He got the job and spent the
first nine years of his career at that particular school.

He says that if there had not been traffic, if he had not pulled into that
school, if the school hadn’t hired him, he would have taught in
a different part of the country, married someone else, and had
different children.

A different life—all from heavy traffi c at the
intersection!

The one constant in our life is time. We are all born with it. We can’t store, inherit, or lend it. The day contains twenty four hours and the hour sixty minutes no matter who is using it. It doesn’t matter who you know or how rich you are. Time is a constant. It does not hesitate or stop for anyone.

The only way to save time is to use it wisely. When you use time wisely you invest in yourself to be a better, more efficient person in both your personal and professional life. The busiest person seems to have time for everything. A busy person does not let the chores mount up. The jobs are accomplished one after another because of organization.

To the busy person time is too valuable a commodity to handle wastefully or without thought. When you have no time for anything then you might want to reassess your time management skills.

How Often Have You Heard or Used Timeless Phrases?

The title of this blog was the theme song to the movie classic, “Casablanca” and is just one of a multitude of common phrases regarding time. How many have you used, “as time goes by” “time will tell” “it’s about time” “there’s no time” “the time is dragging” “time is of the essence” and ……… “time flies when you are having fun”?

Time Can “Fly” According to What You Are Doing

When you are focused, completely captivated, the experience of time speeds up. We experience this when writing an exam, watching a good movie or playing our favourite sport. In a hypnosis performance I always demonstrate this time lapse by asking the hypnotized folks, (after ninety minutes), how long do they think they have been on stage with me. The usual answer is anywhere from “I just got here” to “one to five minutes”.

Time Can “Fly” According to Lack of New Memory Experiences

Memory is based on association with old memory. Any new memory is processed by the brain by retrieving any previous experience. When the new information is different from previous, it is then stored in the brain. Example: You go out with two friends, George and Nancy every Thursday night. One Thursday Carter came out with your group. Which Thursday will be easy to remember? The extent of clarity and intensity depends on the emotion at the time, the uniqueness of the event, was it large or loud or amazing.

Time Can “Fly” According to Age

Ask any pensioner how they are doing since they retired. The usual answer is: “ I don’t know where the days go, they just seem to fly by”. These days seem to go faster as we get older due to lack of new memories. As we age we become more resistant to change. It’s much easier to resist learning and go with the old way. This does not mean that a person cannot enjoy retirement but the concept of time speeds up as learning slows down.

I love this discussion of time and it certainly merits further blogs, but I’ve run out of time.
